Year 6

Gallery Rebels

In year 6 we have been learning all about the three different art genres: Impressionism, Expressionism and Surrealism. We had the opportunity to create a painting for each art genre and we really enjoyed learning how to paint in different styles. Alongside our artwork, we wrote a narrative, poem and newspaper article about different paintings.

We have also focused on a particular aspect of artwork by Damien Hirst involving formaldehyde. We evaluated his work deciding whether it is beauty or brutality. After looking at both sides of the argument, year 6 held a debate to discuss whether his work is art or not. What are your views?

In science, we have been learning about light. To understand how light travels, we used wool to demonstrate how it travels in a straight line. Also, we made periscopes so we could see over things and around corners.

At the end of our topic, we invited our family into school to look at our art gallery. They really enjoyed looking at our wonderful paintings and some of the sculptures we have been creating at home. Take a look at some of our paintings and home learning projects.

Frozen Kingdom

The cold, bitter winds of Antarctica and the moving giant glaciers of the Arctic Ocean have been our home for the past term, well, not literally. We (Year 6) have been studying the Frozen Kingdoms of our planet and have discovered a number of fascinating facts and stories from two of the coldest parts of our planet.

The start of our 'expedition' began with investigating how icebergs are formed and their impact on the world. We discovered one particular event, which involved the deception of icebergs, that's right, the sinking of the Titanic. To Mr Foster's delight, we held an intense and detailed debate about whether the sinking of the Titanic was an unfortunate accident or an avoidable disaster. Let me tell you, it got intense!

After this, we studied the wildlife in and surrounding the Arctic region. We had a fantastic trip to the Wildlife park to meet Britain's only polar bears. Check out our pictures for more. Our trip was also featured in the Ash Hill newsletter, thanks to the school's reporters, who joined us on our trip.

To finish our fantastic topic, we held a 'crisis meeting' when the ship Sub-Zero began to sink. Little did the world know, the European leaders were aboard the ship having a secret meeting. It was up to us to organise an international rescue. We wrote a 12 hour action plan, discussed with scientists, the military and agents what the best course of action would be and we recorded a message to send to the passengers, persuading them to stay calm.

Any question you have about the wonders of the world's Frozen Kingdom, let us know and, as experts, we'll try to answer them.

We are busy preparing for our SATs.

Write to you soon.

Love Year 6.

Hello and welcome back to Year 6 November 1914,

We are currently knee deep in foal smelling water, in a trench somewhere in the Eastern part of France. The air is thick with smoke and the constant sound of bomb shells whistles unbearably through our ears...

If you haven't already guessed it, we are studying the First World War this half term. We have learnt a great deal about the Great War; we've learnt how the war impacted upon the people of the world. As a token of our remembrance, we visited our local cenotaph and paid our respects in the form of a minutes silence. We recognised many of the names engraved on the cenotaph itself and learnt why a poppy is the symbol of remembrance.

To start our topic off with both excitement and curiosity, Victoria Reeves from the Remembrance Day Roadshow came to visit school. Along with her very friendly volunteers, we learnt a great deal about the war and the men from Stainforth who joined the war. We had the opportunity to hold real artefacts from the period. See the photos below.

Additionally, we have learnt a great deal about why the war started, who Lord Kitchener was and how the power of propaganda persuaded people to enlist. We also had a re-enactment morning of our own where we had to decide whether to enlist or not (both Mr Foster and Miss Fraser were very persuasive). We then dug a trench and role-played how it must have felt to be told to 'go over the top'.

Please have a look at our Writers' Page to see our own 'Lord Kitchener style' persuasive speeches. Would you be persuaded? Leave us a comment.

Year 6 enter the world of 'Art'

This term, we are investigating who and what 'Gallery Rebels' are. Did you know that Impressionist artists rebelled against the 'normal' art of their time and used quick brush strokes, colour and light to capture a moment in time. Expressionist artists present emotions through art, for example Edvard Munch's 'Scream'.

So far we have located the world's art galleries and compared their localities. We've explore the artist's palette and evaluated the effects of colour. We have used famous paintings as inspiration for creating fantastic narratives. Keep a look out for our story broadcasts.

In Science, we investigated the question 'is the colour green, green?' We conducted an experiment called chromatography, which is an experiment that uses a solvent (water) to break a felt-tip pen into its pure pigments.

Watch this space for pictures of our up-and-coming art gallery and homework projects.

Bye for now,
