Stainforth Kirton Lane Primary School

Year 3

Tremors

This half term in Year 3, we have been exploring the concept of Tremors.   They have investigated the Worlds ‘Ring of Fire’, using atlases and the internet to research where Volcanoes and Earthquakes happen.

Our Role Play area was made into a newsroom. The children became reporters investigating Volcanoes and Earthquakes around the world.

They children created some fantastic Volcanoes as part of their project homework.

Heroes and Villains

Kapow! Smash! Boom!

This half-term’s topic is Heroes and Villains. We have been researching information on Gandhi, Amelia Earhart, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa and Ben Parkinson. Our literacy work has included writing a biography, making a riddle and writing a fairy-tale with a twist.

In RE we have focused on the Easter story, learning about the Last Supper and the days leading up to the Resurrection.

In Maths we have been learning how to use column addition and subtraction. We have also been learning the different forms of measurement (we even measured Miss Metcalfe and Mr Foster).

Our class book was Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’ – We have been on the lookout for possible witches in our school!

Our role-play area has been a ‘Super Investigation Station’ – a bit like a police station for super heroes and villains. We have been investigating the appearance of a mysterious outline and several clues outside our classroom.

Finally we all wore our Super hero/villain outfits which we made at home as part of our Home Project activity. We had an awesome catwalk where we showed off our outfits and our super pose. We also finally uncovered the witch that has been walking around our school in disguise, you will never believe who it was!

Predators

We had a WILD time with this topic! Sam’s Safari brought lots of animals to see us in Y3. We met: A Snake, Millipede, Blue-Tongued Skink, Armadillo, Praying Mantis, Stick insects, Frogs, Turtle, Chinchilla, Leopard Gecko and a mouse called Mr Jangles.

It was SO exciting to learn about them and have the chance to see them up close. The Armadillo was very funny, it liked to eat chocolate biscuits and it has a famous relative – its dad was in one of the Harry Potter films!

As part of this topic we also designed, drew and wrote about our ‘Ultimate animal’. Some of them sounded quite scary!

We also wrote some Haiku Poems, these were quite tricky as we were only allowed to write 3 lines. Using 5 syllables in the 1st and 3rd line and 7 syllables in the 2nd line.

In maths we learned about tally charts, pictograms and bar charts. We did a survey to find out different year groups favourite animals and used the information in our maths work.

Our reading book was ‘Babe The Sheep Pig’.

Scrumdiddlyumptious

What a gloriumptious half term we’re having! We are working hard on the ‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’ topic. We are enjoying our book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ which is being read to us by Mrs Oxley in her funniest voices!

We have taste-tested lots of different fruits, pineapple turned out to be the most popular and dragon fruit was the strangest we had ever seen.

Last week we received a letter, asking us to invent a new, delicious smoothie for a Master Chef challenge . . . how exciting?!

Our teachers have been wowed and amazed by all the fantastic homework projects we’ve completed with our families’ help. We’ve stuffed ourselves silly with the delicious cakes and buns. It’s a good job we’re learning about fractions so we can share the cakes equally! Because we are eating so many cakes we have started to take part in a daily 5 minute jog. This has taught us how to pace ourselves, control our breathing and challenge ourselves daily. It wakes us all up and gives us an energetic start to our day! Look out for us at the next Olympics!

Ciao! From all of us in Y3.

We are learning about 'Tremors' this half term and already we have learned lots about volcanoes, in particular Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii, Italy. We have done lots of different writing about volcanoes; a newspaper report, a story, a poem and a natural disaster leaflet. We have made up a fact rap/talk for writing rhyme to help us remember important facts about Mount Vesuvius. We hope you like it!

We have been having fun in our volcano role-play area; playing Volcano Top Trumps, labelling diagrams of volcanoes, pretending to be reporters filming near volcanoes. On our photo you can see some of the fantastic homework we’ve done.

We have a new cosy reading area where we can get comfortable to read our topic books, what do you think of it? We LOVE it!
