Stainforth Kirton Lane Primary School

Year 2

Muck, Mess and Mixtures.

We kick started our topic by taking part in our memorable experience which was a VERY messy day (take a look at the pictures). We had so much fun making patterns in the shaving foam, squelching the wormy pasta and making a gloopy mixture of talc and water (which smelt great!).

During our topic time we researched the art work of Carl Warner, he creates his art by turning everything into food, so we decided to give this ago!

In literacy we were learning how to write instructions. We didn’t start out very well and Miss Metcalfe ended up covered in chocolate, but we soon got a lot better.

We REALLY enjoyed sharing our class book George’s Marvellous Medicine. We enjoyed it that much that we decided to become George and create our own Marvellous Potion.

Finally, Year 2 would like to give a big shout out to all our families who helped create the awesome homework projects that the children have been bringing into class. We really are looking forward to seeing what else you can create at home.

Pirates

Ahoy there me hearties! Land Ahoy!

In Year Two, we have spent an exciting eight weeks as pirates-in-training! First of all, we learned about real life heroes of the sea, including Captain James Cook and Grace Darling. They were both very brave in different ways.

We really enjoyed listening to fictional pirate stories and our two favourites were Pirates Love Underpants and The Night Pirates. We all created our own pirate characters such as Wrecking Ruby and Terrible Tyler. We wrote stories using these new, fearsome pirates.

We had great fun on board our role play ship – The Kirton. Most of us wanted to be either the Captain or The Quarter Master. The ship’s cook made rats pie and shark & chips.

In Science we investigated floating and sinking. We had to estimate how many cubes a toy boat could hold and decide which material would make the best raft for paper clips!

To end our project, we had a party to celebrate becoming fully fledged pirates. We had to prove we could walk the plank and play Musical Islands. The food and drink included Cheesy Cannon Balls, Crab Wafers, Shark Fin Bites, Pirate Rum and Tropical Tea!

Land Ahoy was a great project, but we are already involved in the next one – Wriggle and Crawl. Worm Hunting here we come!

Muck, Mess and Mixtures.

Our work has been based on the Roald Dahl book George’s Marvellous Medicine.  We are only a few chapters in but are really enjoying it.  We used our amazing imaginations to predict what might happen to Granny when she drinks her medicine. Poppy thought she would grow wings and turn into an angel, but Tyler thinks she will shrink and have small feet and tiny toe nails!

We had a visit from the horrible grunion of a grandma herself. She was very scary and didn’t like children.  We hope she doesn’t come again!

Now we are making our own medicines and potions.  We wonder what we could turn Mrs Walton into!

In Science we had a great Messy Mixtures Day – shaving foam, jelly, cornflour, moisturiser, custard, washing up liquid and soap flakes were some of the things we could touch and smell.  Our classroom smelt beautiful and our hands were clean and soft! Next we are investigating ‘Which stuff is stickier?’  Sounds like fun!

As well as working hard, we are enjoying making Christmas cards and calendars – we hope you will like them!  Lots of singing too in practise for our Christmas concert.  We are all getting excited about our Christmas party and visit to Cast to watch Sleeping Beauty.

Street Detectives

We are having a busy but enjoyable first half term.  Everyone has settled in really well although we weren’t so keen on so much hard work to begin with!

Our project is called ‘Street Detectives’ and we have been learning about life in and around Stainforth both now and in the past. We have made maps of our route to school, learnt the names of different types of houses/homes and looked at familiar buildings in the village.  Next week we will be hearing about what it was like to work down the pit so we will tell you more about that later.

In Maths our favourite week has been money week!  We now recognise different coins and their values and know how to pay in a shop.  Mrs Walton surprised us by putting REAL cakes and biscuits in our role play area and giving us REAL money to buy them!  Some children in Year Two get pocket money for doing jobs so we talked about how we can save money to buy something bigger and better.  Although most children knew we get money from a bank, unfortunately they didn’t realise we have to put it there in the first place!

In English we have listened to and written our own poems.  We wrote a class poem about what we see on our way to school and also some wonderful ‘Magic Box’ poems.  Here are some for you to read:

Into the box I will put…

A pretty pink flower from the garden

A fluffy pink pillow

A sparkly shiny diamond

My box is fashioned from silver, gold and diamonds.

I will hide my box at the bottom of the ocean.

                                      Bailey

Into the box I will put…

A wicked witch’s spells

A photo of a Chinese dragon

A blue cowboy hat.

I will hide my box under my brown table.

                                      Adam

We are looking at the traditional tale of the Three Little Pigs now.  We love performing the story using Talk for Writing Actions.  We have just received a letter from Mama Pig asking us to write to the wolf so that’s our next job!

Finally, we are looking forward to Computing Week.  We will be learning how to take photographs and use different effects to change them.  Watch this space for our gallery.
