Year 5 & 6

Year 5 Autumn 1

In Year 5 this half term we have been carrying out topic work based on ‘Pharaohs’. We travelled back 5000 years to the dusty realms of ancient Egypt. Entered a world of mysteries and curses, mummies and kings and tasted ancient Egyptian delights. We also found out about life on the river’s fertile banks, discovering Egypt and its fascinating culture. In art we designed our own jewellery and researched the beautiful clothing that was once worn.

In science we carried out experiments on different materials based on conductivity, transparency, permeability, absorbency and hardness. Together we recorded our results and discussed which materials would good for some job and not others.

We invited parents in to share our wealth of knowledge and carried out a carousel of activities such as death mask making, food tasting, paper plate jewellery and pasta Egyptian art.

Year 6 Autumn 1

This half term, Year 6 have been learning all about art. We were lucky enough to loan some famous painting from Doncaster museum. We have focused on three different art genres: Impressionism, Expressionism and Surrealism. We had the opportunity to create a painting for each art genre and we really enjoyed learning how to paint in different styles. Alongside our artwork, we wrote a narrative, poem and newspaper article about different paintings.

In science, we have been learning about light. To understand how light travels, we carried out an experiment to see how light travels in straight lines. Also, we made periscopes so we could see over things and around corners.

At the end of our topic, we invited our family into school to look at our art gallery. They really enjoyed looking at our wonderful paintings and some of the sculptures we have been creating at home. Take a look at some of our paintings and homework down below in the gallery.

Super learning week

Last half-term Year 5 and 6 worked very hard during super learning week in creating parcels to send off to Australia. There were many great designs and teamwork skills shown so well done to both year groups.

Year 5 Autumn 2

During this half term, we read information texts to find out about the Solar System and the Sun, using mnemonics to help us remember the facts. We made a Solar System and investigate the cycle of day into night.

We also learnt about Galileo, the ‘father’ of modern astronomy and his famous astronomical discoveries. Taking on the roles of the planets, we used movement to demonstrate the motions of the planets and moons.

We investigated the lunar myths and wrote poems based on space. Then we made a space shuttle and tested the materials for durability in our science session. We also learnt what it was like to be an astronaut by visiting the ‘Space Centre’ in Leicester.

Space Museum

On Tuesday 28th November Year 5 went to the Space Museum. They had a great experience trying out all the different simulators and activities there.

Year 6 Autumn 2

This half term, Year 6 have been learning all about World War 1 and World War 2. We started our topic off with a World War 1 workshop at school. We did lots of interesting things such as: looking at artefacts, dressing up in different uniforms, making a poppy and making a cup of tea using tea leaves (Some of us didn’t like the tea as we used powered milk!).

Also this half term, we were lucky enough to go on an amazing trip to Eden Camp. We explored all the different huts and it made us really think about what it would have been like during the war. Another exciting workshop we did in school was with Mr Foster were we did various role play scenarios. One of the scenarios we had to pretend we were in the town square signing up to join the army with Lord Kitchener. It was great fun.

We really enjoyed learning about this topic. Take a look at some of the photographs from our workshops.

Year 5 Spring 1

Thanks for reading our page. This half term has been fantastic for us but not so fantastic for the people who suffered from the medieval pestilence! If you've not already guessed, this half term we have been studying the plague that hit Britain in the 1300's and AGAIN in the 1600's.

We've been fascinated by the plague, princes and peasants. Not only were we visited by Pestilence itself but also Molly, a peasant from York whose family received the terrible news. Don't tell her that we told you she's a peasant. She was very offended when we suggested this. We discovered that a man called Wat Tyler led a revolt against the King! That's right, he'd had enough of the Feudal System but that didn't work out too well for him as he ended up being executed. We also found that the plague was transferred by fleas.

Take a look at our pictures; see and comment on our amazing work.

Bye for now, there are invertebrates on this half term's horizon.

Year 6 Spring 1

This term Year 6 looked at the topic Frozen Kingdom. In geography we located the polar regions on a map and collected research on the similarities and differences between the two polar regions. To help us learn more about the Arctic and Antarctica we went on a school trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park were we learnt more about polar bears in a ‘Bear Necessities’ workshop.

We’ve discovered all about the wonderful world of invertebrates. Do you want to know more? Come and visit us in the laboratory, I mean classroom.

Year 6 Spring 2

This half-term, we learnt about the Titanic. Take a look at our 3D model of the Titanic. In science we carried out an experiment looking at how icebergs are formed and we discussed the reasons why that tragic event of the Titanic sinking happened.

Year 6 - Crucial Crew Trip

Year 6 had a fantastic school trip to Crucial Crew. They enjoyed many different activities that were put out and many different scenarios that they was in, these differed from Fire and Road Safety to Stranger Danger.

This half-term Year 6 have been doing the topic blood heart. They have currently been reading a book called the 'Pig Heart Boy'. This afternoon they debated on whether we should use animal hearts for transplants in humans. We then had the chance to dissect a pig's heart and look at the different components of it.

A very special well done...

Well done to Conrad in Year 6 who has won a competition with Ash Hill Academy. Pupils moving up to Ash Hill Academy next year were invited to design their very own super hero for moving up tp high school. Take a look at Conrad's design that has been transformed into this poster!

Super Learning Week!

Our Super Learning Week began with all the children entering into Kirton Lane Airport with all their luggage and passports ready to jet off to their destinations. All classes then were assigned their own gate number after having been through Mrs Eccles at passport control and security at the door upon arrival by Mrs Middleton. All bags were checked and they all jetted off to their destinations.

On Monday afternoon we had a visiter from Primary Workshops named T. Arthur-Stubbs. She showed the Year 5 and Year 6 classes the culture of African Dancing. They practiced throughout the week and Kaci and Ellie lead the dance in assembly on Friday afternoon.
